About Us

IDSA advances knowledge and professionalism for those who market and sell in the dietary supplement industry. The IDSA is also the first organization in the field to develop a core body of knowledge on supplementation for the purpose of providing Board Certification to those who prove their mastery of this body of knowledge through the passage of a certification examination.

The dietary supplement industry has continually exhibited its desire for high standards as it has voluntarily initiated any number of codes, guidelines and programs. IDSA’s certification program further contributes to this initiative by recognizing the importance of measuring the skills of those involved in the field against an industry standard for knowledge and experience, thus further improving the overall quality of the profession.

The IDSA Advisory Group
The IDSA Advisory Group is comprised of industry professionals representing just about every segment of the supplement industry - from manufacturers to distributors, to retailers, to dieticians and nutritionists, to sports trainers, to healthcare professionals. Their purpose is to review and advise on all supplement materials published by the IDSA. IDSA-Advisory-Group_1

IDSA's Mission

IDSA’s mission is to advance knowledge and professionalism in the field of dietary supplement advisement through the development and measurement of an industry standard of knowledge and competency.

IDSA's Belief

IDSA believes in the importance of confirming the knowledge of dietary supplement professionals so as to improve the overall quality of the profession, as well as service and safety to the public.

IDSA Facts
  • IDSA is supported by an Advisory Board of industry professionals and managed by an Executive Director. IDSA is not sponsored by or affiliated with any dietary supplement company or manufacturer.
  • It is important to note that IDSA did not create the body of knowledge needed for good dietary supplement advisement. IDSA identified what industry experts agreed were the needed standards.
  • IDSA’s development of the certification process gives full recognition to the diversity of dietary supplement professionals around the world, while also providing a unified set of standards for safe and competent practice.
  • The IDSA program focuses on certification and is a strong complement to other organizations’ existing training and education programs.
  • IDSA’s Industry Advisory Board includes members from around the world with varied backgrounds in dietary supplementation. IDSA is proud of the diversity of its Board Members as they provide unique perspectives and contributions toward the realization of the organization's mission statement.

IDSA Certification Has Value
Many professions use credentialing to establish criteria for fairness, quality, competence and/or safety for professional services or products. It is therefore important that a certification organization has credibility and their certification has legitimacy. Certification without those has little value. To make sure IDSA’s certification programs are meaningful, have value and are universally recognized, we follow the standards and guidelines (and are going through the accreditation process) of The National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA), which is the accreditation body of the Institute for Credentialing Excellence (ICE). Certification programs that receive NCCA Accreditation demonstrate compliance with the NCCA’s Standards for Accreditation of Certification Programs. NCCA standards require demonstration of a valid and reliable process for development, implementation, maintenance and governance of certification programs. IDSA is in the process of receiving NCCA accreditation.

Industry Comments
  • "I think knowing our distributors and representatives have a confirmed level of knowledge about FDA dietary supplement regulations, along with improved supplement knowledge makes me feel a whole lot more comfortable."
  • "It’s about time someone developed an important training and certification program like this. I think anyone who is talking to people about health related products or services should have some type of basic, standardized level of knowledge."

The IDSA is the first dietary supplement organization providing professional certification for those who inform or advise on the use of dietary supplements.
